NPT is a standard for tapered threads used to connect pipes and fittings in the United States. Threads of 60° shape with flat crests and roots are covered by ANSI/ASME standard B1.20.1. When torqued, the flanks of NPT threads compress against each other, forming a seal. However, there is still a gap between the crests and roots of the threads, causing a leakage around this spiral.
Bottoming taps have a two-thread lead and are intended to guarantee that thread run-out is kept to a bare minimum when tapping to the bottom of a blind hole.
